Frequently Asked Questions

Help! Who's who?

What is a licensed therapist?

Licensed therapists have met all state requirements to hold and maintain a professional license. Getting licensed takes years of education, thousands of clinical hours of experience, and considerable follow-through. Licensed therapists have earned their credentials and often have niches and specialties, whereas pre-licensed clinicians are more likely to be working to find their “treatment of choice” and “best fit” clients. Licensed clinicians are almost always more expensive.

What is a pre-licensed therapist?

Pre-licensed therapists have completed therapy internships and earned their graduate degrees, but they have not met the state requirements to possess a professional license. They continue to meet with a clinical supervisor. They typically cost more than interns but less than licensed therapists. They may have three to four years of experience practicing therapy and may already specialize in one area or another.

What is a Practicum/Intern therapist?

Interns are students in master’s or Doctoral programs who are earning hours towards licensure. They are learning to be clinicians. They are supervised both at their internship site (where they do therapy) and in school. Interns are newer to the field, and their fees are much lower.
